Mary Lou,

A very, very good point. In many cases the rules for competitions are rather restrictive, so it is important to understand the requirements before you enter.

Thanks,

This discussion has been both refreshing and educational. The one place where I stop to consider how I optimize an image is when it is going to be entered into a competition. At that point, I think one needs to read the requirements. It is always possible to decide not to enter, but if an image is entered it needs to be true to the competition's requirements.

My greatest pleasure comes from finding out how to bring my personal expression into my images. That means before snapping the shutter and in the optimization of the image. I think most of us see our photography as art!

Lynn,

I do, indeed! There is still room available for my Austria Photo Workshop, which will visit Vienna, Salzburg, the Danube River Valley, and some cool spots in the Alps. And there will be more, so stay tuned!

Gary,

My knees would have been knocking too! For what it's worth, in the cases of the photos shown here I did check my footing carefully. But your lesson is a good one that all should take to heart!

Bill,

I think the most reckless thing I do is cycling in Manhattan. Everything else seems to pale by comparison!

While I might have slightly less fear than the average person, I'm also cautious. I think if you saw video of me in these situations it wouldn't have looked as crazy as a still photo with a cool perspective.

I had an experience at the Grand Canyon where I stepped onto a rock surface at the edge assuming there was a shear rock face below me. I set up the tripod and shot in a panorama of directions. After leaving the spot, I climbed along the edge and set up again looking back on where I had just stood. To my surprise, the former spot was not supported by a rock face. It was a 4" thick rock projection sticking out 4 to 5'beyond the rock face overhanging the Canyon below. When my friend came by and asked me why I looked shaken and stunned, I pointed at the ledge. He didn't believe me at first. But then he proceeded to describe the cracks in it making me feel even worse. My breathing and knees recovered gradually. I had made a very bad assumption about my perceived risk! Lesson learned.

Life is not for the faint of heart. The risks appear to be manageable for someone with your apparent good balance and agility.

Avoid being reckless as we need your words of wisdom.

When my wife and I were in Seattle a couple of years ago, we went to Pike Street Market mainly to watch them selling and throwing fish! I had my camera for photos of that, but was also captured by the displays of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. I look forward to revisiting that location.

I agree with all the earlier posts. I am enthralled with these markets, and I have photographed the huge one in Budapest. To add to the travelers list: a great and famous one in Cleveland: very colorful ones in Peru (Cusco, Urubamba, Lima); one right on the Grand Canal in Venice: Faneuil Hall in Boston-the list could be endless. I also like fish markets and flea markets. I particularly like to juxtapose colorful native costumes with the produce. And the trifecta is adding a great face and mannerisms!

Tim, I fall into the camp of both enjoying farmers' markets and making photographs while there. I like all of the elements of design present in the produce presentations and also the intriguing nature and faces of the proprietors and their associates.

One of our favorite markets is in Barcelona, Spain.

Mark,

I think you're absolutely right! This reminds me of an experience I had at the San Luis Obispo farmer's market while leading a photo workshop there. We started photographing some fruit, and one of the farmer's told us to wait because we weren't photographing the best fruit. She pulled some more good stuff from the back, and proceed to arrange it for us, letting us know she was an amateur photographer. The pride was wonderful to see!

I'm with you - I travel and photograph foods in both markets and bakery/pastry shops - it is fascinating! I think it's because it shows what the local people grow and eat, their creativity (bakeries & pastry shops), the colors, the smells (something we can't yet capture with a DSLR), and the approach to food shopping (which is very different than in the US). It provides insight into who our brothers and sisters are on the planet and how they live!

Thanks,
Joel

The top reasons I believe why we photograph fruits, vegetables and people at farmers' markets:

• the fruits and vegetables are releasing pheromones compelling us to look at them, handle them, photograph them, even buy them...
• the fruits and vegetables don't ask for model releases...
• we're seeing the colors and shapes of fruits and vegetables in "real" light -- as opposed to the sterile light in supermarkets...
• the fruits and vegetables are grown, prepped and "presented" at these markets by "real" people who take pride in their work and enjoy providing us with visual pleasure and healthy eating. They're fun to be around and we're attracted to them...
• there's more, but buy locally grown produce wherever you live and visit...

We're lucky in Arcata, Calif. to have one of the best farmers' markets and I also always bring my camera when I go!

I, too, love farmers' markets. It's the patterns, the colors, the organization of the place, no matter where. I've photographed them in Paris, Prague, Wilmington, Delaware, Beloit, Wisconsin, San Francisco, and Hawaii. They are all somewhat different, but basically all the same (and the sellers know what they are doing to tempt us to buy).

Lot's of colors, lot's of patterns, lot's of shapes... interesting textures... yet there is still a bit of randomness to the overall scene. It all carries your eye throughout the frame... over and over.

Glen,

Yes, indeed, the displays can be very cool! And I suspect part of the reason I am so fond of farmer's markets in general is the great memories of the great Thursday night farmer's market in San Luis Obispo, not too far from you...

I too am drawn to farmer's markets. I usually shoot the ones in Santa Barbara on Tues and Sat. When we were in France and Italy last year, I shot at farmer's markets there, also.
I'm drawn to the order and patterns of the fruit displays, as well as the people who shop there.

Donnette,

That does sound great! Except for the lost part! But I'm delighted to hear the story had a happy ending.

Hopefully my bag will arrive soon, but thus far no sign. But I think I'm going to look at this as me taking one for the team in order to help ensure my Austria Photo Workshop in May involves absolutely no lost luggage. ;-)

Hope you're well!
