Six Years of DDQ

This month marks six years that I’ve been sending out the Digital Darkroom Questions (DDQ) emails. So now I’m into year “lucky number seven”. I suppose on some level I’m a bit spooked by the fact that time seems to have raced by so quickly. At the same time, it is pretty remarkable to be able to look back on those six years and see how much things have changed, and how much they’ve remained the same.

The DDQ emails started out as a bit of an experiment in an effort to be more efficient about answering repeated questions from photographers utilizing digital tools. I had no idea what to expect, and frankly was surprised (and delighted) that it continued to grow in popularity.

I’m intrigued by the success of DDQ in terms of how many people receive the emails (almost) every day. I have found it fascinating in terms of learning more about how people learn, how they consume information, and what their pet peeves are (I happen to be an expert on pet peeves!).

It’s also interesting that the core challenges facing photographers haven’t changed much. Sure, the tools and capabilities and features change all the time (way too fast, arguably), but the frustrations and challenges remain largely the same. The biggest challenge has been workflow efficiency. So as I look back on six years of Digital Darkroom Questions, it’s refreshing to see so much focus from so many players in the industry on workflow software and tools to improve efficiency for the digital photographer.

    Hi Tim,

I just wanted to say Thank You for being there. I chose your 3 year subscription because I knew, just as warranties run out that as soon as my 1 year subscription closed I’d have a few more questions. What I think I like most about your answers is that you don’t miss much. I read your free DDQ answers from others for about a year when I finally decided to order & I’ve never looked back.

Now if I could only get you to ride along on a shoot with me once a year I’d have it made. And for those of you who haven’t tried it, believe me, it’s well worth the investment in knowledge building.
